Counting Down The Best Romantic Movies in 2012

Introduction
Were you impressed by Rachel McAdam's acting skills in The Vow? Or did Reese Witherspoon swoon you with her threesome action in This Means War? Romance and love are difficult emotions to portray in movies. Watching actors falling in love onscreen can be both fascinating and unsettling.This year has been good for date movies though they face stiff competition from other genres. Here is a list I compiled for the top romantic movies 2012.

1) This Means War
This is a romantic spy action comedy featuring Reese Witherspoonk, with Chris Pine and Tom Hardy portraying CIA agents competing for the love of the same woman. Despite their initial pact not to fight with each other, they both resorted to CIA resources to best each other and win her hand. It features a great cast and it is suitable for the kids and the whole family.

2) Liberal Arts
A young man turns up at a professor's retirement party, when he meets a fellow student played by Elizabeth Olsen. A romantic relationship ensues.

3) Anna Karenina
Historical period drama based on Leo Tolstoy's famous novel. A scandalous affair that breaks out and is thrown in the midst of a love story. Strong performance from Keira Knightley and not to be missed.

4) Friends with Kids
Friends with Kids is a romantic comedy featuring Jennifer Westfeldt and a group of friends living in Manhattan. When they observe the misery that children can cause to marriage, they decide to have a child together and continue active dating. It also features a role played by Megan Fox.

5) The Deep Blue Sea
This is a remake of the 1955 film featuring Rachel Weisz, who plays the wife of a judge partaking in an affair with a previous RAF pilot. She is trapped between a lifeless relationship and an uncertain life. Weisz gave an excellent acting performance and the film received good reviews from critics.

6) Titanic 3D
I know that this isn't strictly a 2012 release but this is one of the greatest films of all time in 3D format! It has everything including compassion, love, horror of the sinking ship. Who can forget the realistic performances from Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio?

7) The Lucky One
The Lucky One is a story about a marine, played by Zac Efron, who is on a journey to find a woman acting as his good luck charm during his war time tour in Iraq. The two form a romantic relationship, signifying the first mature movie for Efron since his Disney days.

8) Think Like A Man
This is a romantic comedy featuring the parallel stories of four African American couples, all readers of a book by Steve Harvey with the similar name as the title. The men appear to turn the tables on their friends with hilarious consequences.

9) The Silver Linings Playbook
Oscar winning material featuring a special relationship between a bipolar person played by Bradley Cooper, and a widowed woman played by Jennifer Lawrence. One of the top romantic movies 2012.

10) LOL (Laughing Out Loud)
A remake of the French comedy film with the same name. A coming of age drama featuring Miley Cyrus as a troubled teenager, and Demi Moore as her mother who accidentally stumbles across her journal.

11) The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Adaptation of a coming of age novel featuring excellent performance from Harry Potter actress Emma Watson. It is a refreshing tale of a young man finding his feet in his freshman years in college.

12) Moonrise Kingdom
A pair of young kids form a love connection and flee their town whilst people form a search party to look for them. Brilliant direction from Wes Anderson.

13) Rock of Ages
Lighthearted romantic musical film with top performances from the rock bands through the ages. Not to miss if you are a rock or metal fan. Includes lavish performance from none other than Tom Cruise!

14) Magic Mike
If you are a fan of the Full Monty then you shouldn't miss this male stripper film with Channing Tatum in the lead role. Exploration of the underworld of strip clubs and drugs.

15) Take This Waltz
This film features the drama of a woman called Margot played by Michelle Williams. She has conflicting feelings for her husband and a rickshaw driver living across the street.

16) Ruby Sparks
A romantic comedy of a young writer struggling to conquer his writer's block by writing a story about a woman he saw in his dreams. The problems begin when she then comes into his life.

17) Miami Heat
The fourth installment in the Step Up dance movie series featuring Ryan Guzman and Kathryn McCormick. They form a protest group with the dance teams when a tycoon tries to develop the slum region.

18) Celeste And Jesse Forever
Romantic comedy featuring Rashida Jones and Andy Samberg as a divorcing couple who are still trying to maintain contact with each other as they pursue other goals.

19) Bachelorette
Bacherolette is a black comedy starring Kirsten Dunst, Isla Fisher and Lizzy Caplan coming to a reunion wedding party. They are shocked when they learn that an unpopular girl nicknamed Pigface is getting hitched before they do.

20) The Vow
Rachel McAdams plays the victim of a car accident, erasing all the memories of her romance with her husband played by Channing Tatum. The husband has to do everything in his power to regain her heart in this sad drama.

21) What to Expect When You're Expecting
A romantic comedy with the same title as a pregnancy self help guide. The movie follows four couples as they struggle to cope with the expectation of parenthood. All star cast featuring Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz and Elizabeth Banks.

22) The First Time
Teenage comedy about a high school kid's pining love for a girl that is beyond his reach. He hooks up with another girl and develop a complicated relationship.

23) Perfect Sense
Perfect Sense features the relationship between two individuals in the midst of an epidemic that wipes out the senses of the whole population. The cast starred Ewan McGregor and Eva Green as they struggled to cope with each loss of sense, revealing the strength of the human spirit and true love. Definitely not one for the fainthearted.

24) The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2
Horror, romance, action, vampires... this one has everything in it but zombies. This is the final conclusion of the Twilight Saga so it would only make sense if you have watched the previous ones.

25) The Five-Year Engagement
Another romantic comedy starring English actress Emily Blunt and the events that constantly disrupt her relationship, extending the period of her engagement as a result.

26) Bel Ami
A second adaptation of the romantic French novel by Guy de Maupassant. Robert Pattison plays an ex soldier trying to climb the ranks of society by forming relationships with wealthy woman.

Final Thoughts
So there you have it, the most popular romantic movies 2012 have drawn to a close. There are a lot of date movies in the list, some awful and others not so bad. It has been a pretty strong year with The Silver Linings Playbook receiving eight Oscar nominations. Perhaps an honorable mention goes to Woody Allen's film To Rome with Love, another perfect option for a date movie.
